Fans debate whether Jacquees truly is the ‘King of R&B’

On Friday (Nov. 8), Jacquees released his highly anticipated King of R&B album. The project first gained momentum under the name Round 2, but suffered multiple delays as it missed its July release date. Jacquees furthered the LP’s fuel when he retitled it the King of R&B, a lofty proclamation that’s been hit with widespread debate.

The 18-track album sees added features from Quavo, Tory Lanez, T.I., Lil Keed and Lil Gotit, in addition to the anticipated assists from Young Thug, Gunna, Lil Baby, Summer Walker, Bluff City, FYB, TK Kravitz and Future.

Jacquees first claimed himself to be the reigning genre king last year. The comment was met with debate from R&B mainstays Tyrese, Tank, Eric Bellinger and Usher, as well as a sparked beef with YK Osiris.

“I even had to tell my girl, ‘I ain’t cocky. I’m just confident,’ Jacquees told Apple Music, as shown on the album’s Apple Music bio. “I just think I could be number one. I’m not trying to hate on nobody or knock nobody else. I’m just telling you what I think I can do… You can only be humble for so long.”

Now that King of R&B has arrived, fans are weighing in on if Jacquees is living up to his self-proclaimed title.

“Jacquees the king of R&B after one album??!!!! WTF?!” one Twitter user wrote on Friday (Nov. 8). “R&B leave it to the adults!”

“Jacquees here are some real King of R&B,” another listener tweeted. “Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Sam Cooke, and Stevie Wonder. They never ever referred themselves as ‘kings’ what they did was create music that mattered and spoke to us. It was about the song.”

Others say the album lives up to the hype, as one Twitter user insisted, “Jacquees really is the king of R&B.”

On Wednesday (Nov. 6), Jacquees weighed in on the debate himself while appearing on Sirius XM’s “Sway in the Morning.”

“I call myself the king because of the longevity [I’ve had] with my same group of fanbase. My fanbase is organic. I built it up… when I was like 14…they done grew with me all to this point,” he said. “I done been around the longest… of the people that’s in my age bracket.”

“Sway Universe” host Sway Calloway asked Jacquees how he felt about YK Osiris’ previous comments, where he claimed he lands above Jacquees on the R&B roster.

“I feel like it’s a free world. Everybody can do what they want,” Jacquees replied.
