Ray J is reportedly in talks with members of the Trump administration in hopes of getting his friend and former Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight pardoned. According to Daily Mail, the “Sexy Can I” singer has been lobbying President Trump to pardon Knight, who is currently serving a 28-year prison sentence.

Ray, who recently obtained Knight’s life story rights and will be overseeing several production projects while Knight is behind bars, follows Kim Kardashian’s previous criminal reform efforts with the current POTUS.

Kardashian’s successful lobbying efforts have seen the release of Cyntoia Brown and Trump’s granted clemency toward Alice Johnson in 2018.

“He’s adamant that he can convince Trump to pardon Suge and that people will respect him for doing so,” a source told Daily Mail. “Ray J is very competitive and always has been. He saw what Kim was able to do with her work in the criminal justice system with the Trump administration and he is determined to show he can do the same.”

Ray has reportedly been attempting to meet with Trump at the White House, but his administration wants Ray to join Trump on the road at one of his political rallies instead. The “Love & Hip Hop” star was invited to fly with Trump on Air Force One to his political rallies in Lake Charles, LA and Dallas, TX earlier this month. However, Ray reportedly declined due to scheduling conflicts.

“The people around Ray J keep telling him that the fallout with African Americans for meeting with Trump could be catastrophic to his career. Especially if he shows up at a political rally,” the source said, adding that Ray believes his audience will “continue to rock with him” if he’s successful in his endeavor.

“Ray J feels as though because he’s doing this for Suge, all will be forgiven and the streets will respect him for his effort,” the source said. “If he can get Suge out of prison, he feels folks will respect him as a true mogul who can get things done no matter the political affiliation.”

Last month, TMZ reported that Nick Cannon has been set to pen Knight’s upcoming memoir, with Ray leading a Death Row Records comeback and co-handling movies, music and other media with Knight’s fiancé Toi-Linn Kelly.

The outlet also reported that Knight seemed confident that his prison sentence will be reduced. The music executive was convicted of manslaughter in 2018 for injuring Cle Sloan and killing Terry Carter with his car in 2015. He originally faced an 11-year sentence, which was later doubled under California’s three-strikes law, due to his past convictions. An additional six years was also added to Knight’s sentence for using a vehicle as a deadly weapon in a ‘serious and violent’ felony.

Even if Ray J is unsuccessful in lobbying Trump, Knight’s sentence could be shortened due to overcrowding at his San Diego state prison and his time served.

“Ray J is not just a friend of mine, that’s my little brother, that’s family,’ Knight previously told The Blast in a phone interview. “And I respect Ray J and his business dealings, that’s why I choose him as one of the guys to deal with the music side, as far as Death Row Records, anything to do Death Row, and this great album that he will be putting out.”
