R. Kelly’s ex-wife Drea reveals she was victim-shamed over “Surviving R. Kelly”

In an interview with Extra, R. Kelly’s ex-wife Drea Kelly details the backlash she received since accusing Kelly of abusing her mentally, physically and sexually in the Lifetime docuseries “Surviving R. Kelly.”

“The day I escaped from him, it was a realization that these gates on our property, it was not to keep people out, it was to keep me in,” she said.

Drea and Kelly divorced in 2009 after 13 years of marriage. Drea shares three children with the R&B singer, Jay (19), Joann (21) and Robert Jr. (17). Drea appeared alongside several other women to share her stories of Kelly’s alleged abuse in “Surviving R. Kelly,” which aired this January.

“The victim-shaming, victim-blaming, the backlash, I was not prepared for,” she said. “I thought here I am, this is about women coming forward, women’s empowerment, we’re in this together and I just want to give validity to these women’s stories and hopefully, if they don’t believe them, people will at least think, ‘Well, the ex-wife, she’s speaking, these stories are parallel, let’s pay attention.’ It was the complete opposite.”

Drea revealed that she suffered backlash from her participation in the series and that viewers accused her of lying about her relationship with Kelly and wanting money from him.

“There’s no price tag on any woman’s soul. You can’t put a price on a life,” she explained. “And at the end of the day, women are fighting for their lives. And that’s why I often say, you may love R. Kelly, but you might not like Robert.”

Kelly has currently failed to pay over $20,000 to Drea in child support. On Tuesday (Oct. 29), TMZ reported that a judge ordered Kelly to use the money from his music catalog to make the payments. The accused sex offender will now have to use royalties from entities such as BMI and Sony to pay Drea his monthly child support fees of $20,833.

“If you can afford to pay for your two girlfriends to live in the Trump, you can afford to pay child support for your three children,” Drea said in the interview, referring to reports that Joycelyn Savage and Azriel Clary have been residing at the Trump Tower in Chicago.

“I will continue to go to court. I will continue to fight for my children. As a mother, I’m a lioness and I’m fighting for my cubs,” Drea continued.

Drea concluded the interview by revealing what she would say to R. Kelly now.

“Thank you. Thank you for trying to put this fire out with gasoline because now I burn longer, I burn stronger, I burn brighter,” she said. “I’m so resilient. Now I use that as my fuel. That pain that he put me through, you will never silence me, and I thank you for showing me how strong I am. And I thank you for showing me that you were my Goliath and I am your David.”

Kelly is currently in jail awaiting sentencing for his numerous federal and state charges.
