Tony Award-winning and Oscar-nominated actress Diahann Carroll has died at 84, following a long battle with breast cancer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Carroll, who starred in “Julia” and “Dynasty,” passed away at her home in Los Angeles on Friday morning (Oct. 4), her daughter confirmed.

Carroll broke many barriers, as she became the first African American female to star in a non-stereotypical role in her own primetime network series. In 1962, she became the first Black woman to win a Tony Award for best actress for her role in “No Strings.” Years later, in 1968, she starred in “Julia,” which was considered to be a groundbreaking series, as Carroll was a Black woman in a leading role. She won a Golden Globe for her role in “Julia” in 1969. Carroll also played the role of Dominique Deveraux in the ABC soap opera “Dynasty.”

The famed actress received her best actress Oscar nomination for the 1974 comedy-drama “Claudine.”

Carroll was also known for her role on “A Different World,” where she played Marion Gilbert – the mother of Whitley Gilbert, who was played by Jasmine Guy.

Members of the Hollywood community immediately took to social media to pay tribute to Diahann Carroll and the trailblazing work she accomplished. “Diahann Carroll walked this earth for 84 years and broke ground with every footstep. An icon. One of the all-time greats. She blazed trails through dense forests and elegantly left diamonds along the path for the rest of us to follow. Extraordinary life. Thank you, Ms. Carroll,” said Ava DuVernay.

Halle Berry took to Instagram to thank Carroll for paving the way. “I was a little girl when I saw a woman of color on TV for the first time. It was #DiahannCarroll in ‘Julia,’ a story of a widowed nurse and the first portrayal of a black working woman on TV. I can still feel the impact of that moment to this day. Diahann’s powerful body of work not only paved the way for me, but she is a true testament to women of color in entertainment, and her affect on this world will be felt for years to come,” she wrote.

Taraji P. Henson also tweeted, “#RIPDiahannCarroll thank you for paving the way!!! It was an honor to know you Queen!!! Your legacy will live on through us all!!!”
