On Tuesday (Oct. 1), Amber Guyger was found guilty of murder for fatally shooting her neighbor, Botham Jean.

Back in September of 2018, The former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger believed that Jean was an intruder when she entered his apartment and shot him twice in the chest. During the week-long trial, the jury questioned whether Guyger acted reasonably or if she had intentionally killed Jean. The jury took into account the 911 call that Guyger made after shooting Jean and the bodycam video from officers who responded to the scene. Currently, Guyger faces five years to life in prison.

Lee Merritt, an attorney for the Jean family, stated that this is a huge victory and a step in the right direction for all black people in America. “It’s a signal that the tide is going to change here,” Merritt told reporters. “Police officers are going to be held accountable for their actions, and we believe this is going to change the policing culture all over the world.”

In an attempt to defend herself, Guyger argued that she was scared for her life when she entered an apartment that she thought was hers. “I hate that I have to live with this every single day of my life,” she said on Friday (Sept. 27). “I ask God for forgiveness, and I hate myself every single day. I wish he was the one with the gun who had killed me. I never wanted to take an innocent person’s life.”

As the news hit the internet yesterday, many shared their thoughts on the situation, including Cardi B. Under Shaun King’s post regarding the trial, Cardi wrote: “Throw her under the jail!”

Another Twitter user referenced Guyger’s text messages that hint towards racism. “Deleted text messages of # AmberGuyger. ‘When does this (the MLK shift) end. When MLK is dead..oh wait.’ ‘Black officers have a different way of working and it shows’ ‘Just push them…or spray them with pepper spray.’”
