The anticipation is drawing near for Kanye West’s Jesus Is King album.

Earlier this month, Kim Kardashian-West teased what appeared to be a tracklist for the upcoming project. Toward the end of the cryptic message, the date read, “Sept. 27.” Shortly after, ‘Ye confirmed the news that a new LP was upon us.

Throughout his career, the star has found a way to intertwine religion and hip hop. Although it can be tricky, the Chicago native has found a way to master that art unapologetically. The creation of his weekly Sunday Service has allowed ‘Ye to bring people together with the use of music. In addition to that, the weekly congregation has received a cosign from notable names in the industry including Chance The Rapper, Nicki Minaj and more.

Recently, his wife noticed a positive change in her husband following his latest venture. “Kanye started this, I think, just to heal himself,” she revealed. “It was a real personal thing, and it was just friends and family, and he has had an amazing evolution of being born again and being saved by Christ. People always ask, ‘Well, what are you worshipping?’ Or, ‘What is this?’ It is a Christian service, like a musical ministry. They talk about Jesus and God.”

Although ‘Ye’s album has yet to make its debut, we’ve taken a moment to reflect on ‘Ye’s praiseworthy tracks. Here are the five times Kanye West has taken us to church.

  1. “Jesus Walks”

Back in 2004, ‘Ye dropped the fourth single from his debut album, The College Dropout. Shortly after its debut, “Jesus Walks” instantly became a classic that endorsed Christianity. In addition to the track winning a Grammy for Best Rap Song, it proved that ‘Ye found a way to express his religious views that resonated with many.

“God show me the way because the Devil’s tryna break me down/ (Jesus walk with me) / The only thing that I pray is that my feet don’t fail me now / (Jesus walk) / And I don’t think there’s nothin’ I can do now to right my wrongs (Jesus walk with me) / I wanna talk to God but I’m afraid ‘cause we ain’t spoke in so long.”

2. “Ultralight Beam”

“Ultralight Beam” is featured on West’s album The Life of Pablo, which he dubbed a gospel LP. For the track, the Chicago native called on The Dream, Kelly Price, Kirk Franklin and Chance The Rapper. During an interview, Chance explained how uplifiting ‘Ye’s weekly service is.

“I can’t pinpoint a moment when it was like, Ye, has his — I don’t even know what to call it — his revelation, but he does often like, reference me when he talks about it, and I think that’s important. I think fellowship is the most important thing, period, and if we can’t talk about faith, then it’s like, ‘Why are we talking?’” The Big Day spitter said in regards to West’s Sunday Service.

“Deliver us serenity / Deliver us peace/ Deliver us loving / We know we need it / You know we need it / That’s why we need you now, oh / Pray for Paris / Pray for the parents / This is a God dream/ This is a God dream/ This is a God dream.”

3. “Father Stretch My Hands, Pt. 1”

“Father Stretch My Hands, Pt. 1” serves as another hit record from ‘Ye’s 2016 project. For this time around, ‘Ye called on Metro Boomin, who is known for working with the industry’s finest. In the opening sample of the track, Kanye expresses his desire to submit to God.

“I just wanna feel liberated, I-I, na-na-na/ Who can I turn to? / I just wanna feel liberated, I-I, na-na-na / After all, who can I turn to? / If I ever instigated, I am sorry / If I don’t turn to you / Tell me who in here could relate, I-I-I / No other help I know, I stretch my hands.”

4. “Never Let Me Down”

Originally, “Never Let Me Down” was recorded by JAY-Z for his album, The Blueprint 2: The Gift & The Curse. For his verse, Kanye thanks his grandparents for making his mother. Toward the end of his rhyme, ‘Ye makes a reference to Heaven and thanks God for the favor placed upon his life.

“You sent tears from heaven when you seen my car get balled up / But I can’t complain what the accident did to my left eye/ Cause look what an accident did to Left Eye / First Aaliyah now Romeo must die / I know I got angels watching me from the other side.”

5. “Cudi Montage”

Back in June of 2018, Kanye West joined forces with Kid Cudi for their joint album, Kids See Ghosts. On the outro, ‘Ye asks to be saved by God. As the song comes to a close, West repeatedly asks God to shine his light on him.

“Save me, Lord / Lord shine your light on me, save me, please / Hmm-mm-mm, woah, woah / Lord shine your light on me, save me, please / Hmm-mm-mm, woah, woah / Stay strong.”
