Megan Thee Stallion gets “Hot Girl Summer” trademark approved

  /  09.21.2019

Summer is winding down, but Megan Thee Stallion is keeping the hot girl summer momentum going.

During a recent interview with 103 Jamz via The Neighborhood Talk Instagram page, Megan revealed that the trademark for her coined phrase “hot girl summer,” was approved. When asked about the trademark, she said, “Yep, it’s already in the process. It’s trademarked. We did it.”

Ironically, Megan recently explained her decision to trademark the phrase. While speaking with Allure magazine, she said, “I really didn’t even know that it was gonna catch on how it did. It was just me talking sh-t, telling everybody I was gonna be me for the summer, and they should be them too, like as free as they can be.”

Megan continued, “When I saw Wendy’s and Forever 21 saying, ‘Hey, are you having a Hot Girl Summer?’ I was like, ‘Hell no, Forever 21, you’re going to have to pay me.’ But I just wanted to get it trademarked because it’s me. It’s my thing.”

And while many have been participating in said “hot girl summer,” some were confused about the phrase’s true meaning. Megan gave her explanation of what the phrase means back in July. “It’s about women and men being unapologetically them, just having a good-a— time, hyping up their friends, doing you,” she told The Root. “You definitely have to be a person who can be the life of the party and just a bad b-tch.”

Earlier this month, Megan released the video for her record “Hot Girl Summer,” which features Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign. In the clip, the Houston rapper throws a mega summer party, with cameos by DaniLeigh, French Montana, La La Anthony and Minaj’s man, Kenneth Petty.

We reported last month that the video shoot was interrupted due to permit issues, but Megan was able to secure another location at the last minute.

On another note, “Hot Girl Summer” quickly made history. It became the first female rap collaboration to go No. 1 on iTunes USA.
