On the latest episode of HBO’s The Shop: Uninterrupted, Lil Nas X spoke his truth. During the in-depth conversation, Lil Nas recalled why it was important to reveal his sexuality while his career continues to skyrocket.

“Homosexuality, gay people,” Lil Nas began. “Come on, now. If you really from the hood, you know. For me, the cool dude with the song on the top of everything to say this any other time, I’m doing this for attention in my eyes. But if you’re doing this while you’re at the top, you know it’s for real. It’s showing it doesn’t really matter I guess.”

Back in June, Lil Nas officially announced his sexuality on the last day of LGBTQ Pride Month. As a hint to fans, the 7 rapper encouraged his listeners to listen to his song “C7osure (You Like)” in which he talks about embracing new ideas. “Some of y’all already know, some of y’all don’t care, some of y’all not gone fwm no more but before this month ends I want y’all to listen closely to ‘c7osure,’” the “Old Town Road” rapper wrote to Twitter.

“Brand new places I’ll choose and I’ll go, I know/ Embracin’ this news I behold unfolding/ I know, I know, I know it don’t feel like it’s time/ But I look back at this moment, I’ll see that I’m fine,” he raps.

All in all, Lil Nas’ announcement has not affected his skyrocketing career. More recently, the “Panini” rapper won his first VMA for his hit record ”Old Town Road (Remix),” which features Billy Ray Cyrus. “Thank you so much,” Lil Nas said while accepting his award. “This is my first award, ever. I want to say thank you to this man [Billy Ray Cyrus] for helping me take my career to the next level.”
