The brother of Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles has been arrested and charged with three murders stemming from a shooting on New Year’s Eve in Ohio.
According to The Washington Post, Tevin Biles-Thomas was charged with six counts of murder, three counts of voluntary manslaughter, five counts of felonious assault and one count of perjury in the Dec. 31, 2018 incident. The charges were announced in a joint statement from Cleveland Police and the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office.
The shooting transpired after a group of uninvited guests entered a home, where a fight broke out, according to authorities. The fight then led to the shooting that injured multiple people. Delvaunte Johnson, 19, and Toshaun Banks, 21 were of those hit by the gunfire and died at the scene. A third person, Devaughn Gibson, 23, died at a hospital.
Biles-Thomas, who was on active duty with the Army at the time of his arrest, was apprehended at Fort Stewart in Georgia. He is being held before he is extradited to Cuyahoga County, CNN reports. He has also been denied bond and is due to be arraigned on Sept. 13 in Ohio.
“We appreciate our partnership with the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office and are confident that their efforts will bring justice for the families affected by this terrible incident,” said Cleveland Division of Police Chief Calvin Williams.
Biles hasn’t formally commented on her brother’s current legal issues. However, she tweeted Thursday night (Aug. 29), “Eating my feelings don’t talk to me.” The following morning (Aug. 30) the gymnast liked a tweet, which said, “This is exactly why I hate the media in America. Has nothing to do with @Simone_Biles don’t drag her name through the mud because of something her brother did. She’s an American Icon & Hero for little girls everywhere.”
