Congrats, Lil Nas X! Last night (Aug. 26), the 20-year-old rapper took home Song of the Year at the 2019 MTV VMAs held at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

After delivering an unforgettable performance to his hit, “Panini,” Lil Nas returned on stage to accept Song of the Year for his record “Old Town Road (Remix),” which features Billy Ray Cyrus. In that category, Lil Nas defeated notable artists including Drake, Ariana Grande, Jonas Brothers, Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper and Taylor Swift.

“Thank you so much,” he began. “This is my first award, ever. I want to say thank you to this man [Billy Ray Cyrus] for helping me take my career to the next level.” Keeping his acceptance speech short and sweet, Cyrus thanked the fans and the universe for giving him this opportunity.

Last week, it was confirmed that after 19 weeks at the No. 1 spot, “Old Town Road” was no longer the No. 1 song in America. While posting to Instagram, Lil Nas accepted defeat to music’s newcomer, Billie Eilish.

“This is the first week in 5 months old town road hasn’t been number 1,” Lil Nas wrote. “This journey had taught me so much! can’t wait for y’all to see what’s next. panini official music video coming soon. i love y’all!!!”

Back in July, Lil Nas reflected on his journey while on Twitter. The “Old Town Road” spitter explained that he has come a long way from sleeping on his sister’s floor to having a hit record. “Wow man last year I was sleeping on my sister’s floor, had no money, struggling to get plays on my music, suffering from daily headaches, now i’m gay.”
