Last night (Aug. 26), Missy Elliott returned to the MTV VMAs stage for the first time in 16 years. As expected, Elliott delivered a performance worth remembering.

While taking the stage, Elliott performed a plethora of her hits including “Pass That Dutch,” “Lose Control,” “Throw It Back” and more. As a way to entice her audience, even more, the 48-year-old musician surprised fans with a guest appearance from Alyson Stoner. Stoner was 10 years old when she was first featured as a dancer in Elliott’s 2003 video “Work It,” which made the performance feel full-circle.

After delivering an iconic performance, Elliott accepted the 2019 Michael Jackson Vanguard Award. In addition to thanking her fans, Elliott also expressed gratitude towards her dancers, her mother, Timbaland, Hype Williams, Dave Meyers, Hi-Hat, Sean Bankhead, June Ambrose, Elektra and Atlantic Records, her glam squad, the state of Virginia, Janet Jackson, Aaliyah , Busta Rhymes, Peter Gabriel and Madonna.

“I love y’all,” Elliott said while accepting her award. “I promised I wouldn’t cry because I cry every awards, but this Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award means so much to me. I have worked diligently for over two decades. I never thought that I’d be standing up here… it don’t go unnoticed, the support and love.”

Earlier this month, we reported that Elliott would be this year’s recipient for the coveted award. While on Twitter, Elliott stated that she is humbled by the recognition. “I am Humbly Grateful to be receiving the MichaelJacksonVideoVanguard Award,” she wrote. “I Thank my FANS ‘Supafriends’ who fought diligently to see this day come @KidFury @crissles who rooted for years 4 me I am crying happy tears. Thank you God @MTV @vmas am SO HUMBLED.”

Moving forward, Elliott doesn’t show any signs of slowing down anytime soon. Last week, she dropped her Iconology album, which features five tracks. The EP marks her first project in almost 15 years.
