R. Kelly is having a tough time while incarcerated for child pornography and sex abuse charges.
Recently, Kelly’s attorney, Steve Greenberg, spoke with The Chicago Sun-Times in regards to how his client is holding up. Greenberg explains that his client becomes very emotional when talking about his courtroom battle in Chicago.
“I’ve seen him get very emotional,” Greenberg said when speaking on Kelly. “He’s dealing with a lot of stories that have been made up. He’s not a fighter. I’ve seen him cry when he talks about the situation.”
Further explaining the hardships that the musician has faced, Greenberg states that Kelly has no one to talk to and can’t read to pass the time. “He’s also a spiritual guy, has a Bible with him in his cell, but he can’t read it. It’s basically there for comfort,” Greenberg added. “Now he’s been placed in the MCC’s ‘SHU’ — a cell in solitary confinement away from the jail population and is constantly being moved from cell to cell. He has only the guards to talk to.”
On a lighter note, Greenberg states that despite some negative backlash, Kelly still receives an outpour of love from loyal fans. The attorney explained that the 52-year-old singer receives plenty of mail, which are mostly positive. One of Kelly’s girlfriends has visited him via video while he is in prison.
“One of his two girlfriends just visited the jail. — I don’t know which one, but they can only visit via video. Only his lawyers can see him face to face in solitary,” Greenberg said.
Jocelyn Savage and Azriel Clary have shown their support throughout Kelly’s trial. Last month, there were reports that Kelly was happy with solitary confinement because he was fearful of other inmates. During his trial, Kelly’s attorney argued for bail but the judge ultimately denied the request.
