Last week, Jermaine Dupri found himself in hot water after an interview surfaced where he was asked about female rappers of today. During the conversation, Dupri said that they were all “strippers rapping.”
Yesterday (July 17), the So So Def icon spoke with TMZ to clarify his comments. He explained that during his interview with People, he was asked about three artists: Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion and Nicki Minaj. He emphasized that his opinion on those three rappers doesn’t reflect on female rap as a whole.
“There’s a million artists rapping,” he said. “There’s a million female artists that’s out here rapping. Everybody continues to keep getting…what my statement was, was about the three that she asked me about. It wasn’t about a general conversation about female rap, but everybody turned it into that. ‘He said all female rappers sound like this!’ And I’m like, ‘I never said all female rappers. I never said that one time.’”
The 46-year-old spitter also explained that this conversation has been brewing prior to his interview. “Cardi started her message off by basically saying, now that ‘Jermaine Dupri has said it, I’m gonna address it,’” he referenced Cardi’s comments to begin. “That means, to me, somebody had already said it to her or she’s heard it before. So I just feel like it’s something that people have already been talking about and for some reason [my comment] just became the loudest.”
After facing a ton of backlash from social media for his comments, Durpi wants to ensure that he’s not labeled as sexist. “The one thing I want to make clear on is people keep saying ‘sexist,’” he said. “I’m far from a sexist. Let’s not do that. That’s terrible.”
Recently, Da Brat revealed that she stands behind Dupri on this pressing matter in hip-hop. She explained that the opinions Dupri expressed is a strategic move.
“Everything Jermaine Dupri does, he does strategically,” she said. “You should be thankful that the conversation is even started now because now the focus in on us [female rappers]. New [rappers], seasoned [rappers], legends…everybody’s commenting.”
