T.I. joins Atlanta city jail task force to find positive uses for city's jail

T.I.’s voice is one for the people.

According to WSB-TV 2, T.I. joins a newly reformed task force charged with finding a new use for Atlanta’s city jail. He joins a team of 25 members that will repurpose the Atlanta City Detention Center. Amongst their many duties, the task force will evaluate the potential uses for jail and garner community input. After garnering information from the community, the task force will present recommended changes to Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.

Since being built in 1995, the jail has seen a decline in population. “It is a top priority of the Mayor Bottoms to put this underutilized facility to more productive use as a multi-faceted use center for wellness and healing, skills-building, economic mobility, and crime prevention for people, families and communities impacted by the history of over-incarceration,” a press release about the task force reads.

T.I.’s recognition doesn’t stop there. The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) honored the Atlanta native for his efforts with the community with the inaugural Voice of the Culture Award. ASCAP Chairman of the Board and President, Paul Williams, explained that T.I. deserves this honor.

“T.I. has conquered the worlds of music, TV, and film, helping to popularize a new sub-genre of music in the process,” Williams said in a press release. “His significant contributions to hip-hop music, support for other artists through his record label, philanthropy, community activism, and memorable onscreen roles have had a profound impact on today’s music and culture. There is no one more deserving to receive the inaugural ASCAP Voice of the Culture Award.”

Back in March, T.I. was recognized by the Georgia Senate for his philanthropic work. The Atlanta-Journal Constitution reports that the 38-year-old rapper has had a positive influence on his community. State Senator Donzella James praised Tip for his non-profit organization, Harris Community Works, which helps the disadvantaged and marginalized.

Keep up the great work, T.I.!
