While Lil Nas X is taking over the charts and making history with his breakout single, “Old Town Road,” the success of the song has led to fans and the artist alike celebrating a milestone before it actually was achieved.
This past week, news began circulating that the smash hit had been certified Diamond. Lil Nas X got wind of the announcement and soon celebrated by tweeting, “OLD TOWN ROAD JUST WENT DIAMOND!!!! WTFFFFFF.”
Unfortunately, the RIAA responded to the tweet with an official clarification, noting how the song is currently 3x multi-Platinum. The song has officially sold over three million copies, which is an impressive feat but not yet at the Diamond-tier.
Chart Data’s Twitter account also posted an update commenting on the mishap, adding that sometimes mistakes happen.
“To clarify: Columbia’s twitter account posted a tweet celebrating ‘Old Town Road’ going Diamond, which has since been deleted,” the tweet issued by Chart Data reads. “@RIAA confirms the song is 3x Platinum. Occasionally mistakes happen.”
However, the song did recently hit an exciting milestone that is worthy of all celebration.
“Old Town Road” has remained at the No. 1 slot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 13 consecutive weeks. The monumental reign officially has surpassed Eminem’s “Lose Yourself,” the Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow,” and Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s “See You Again,” making it the longest run for a hip hop song to sit at the top of the charts that many consecutive weeks.
In related news, Lil Nas X recently decided to disclose his sexuality, something that he admitted he had been grappling with keeping private or not. He explained in a new interview with the BBC that the backlash he’s received since commenting on his sexual orientation was to be expected, and how he’s not going to let commentary from negative people slow him down.
“I don’t want to just live my entire life, especially how I got to where I’m at, just not doing what I want to do,” he said. “I’m also, I feel like, opening the doors for more people.”
