Now N' Laters | Chris Brown, Mustard, and Freddie Gibbs & Madlib
What new music will you be listening to this weekend?
With so many new rap albums, mixtapes, EPs and songs dropping every week; knowing which ones are worth your time can be a challenge. But no worries, we’ll help smooth out the process with “Now N’ Laters,” a column that highlights the hottest new releases of the week and the songs you’ll want to listen to now — and later.
This week’s lineup of new releases include an album from the current king of R&B, one of the hottest producers in the game, and one of the premier voices of the streets. Maintaining the energy of his previous extended offering, Chris Brown returns with his latest LP, Indigo. Mustard presents a ten-track collection with Perfect Ten, which is full of high-octane bangers and seismic collaborations. And last, but certainly not least, Freddie Gibbs and DJ Mustard connect for the follow-up to their critically acclaimed Pinata album with Bandana.
With all three releases getting airplay and dominating the conversation, REVOLT shares our critics’ picks for the three songs from each album that stand a cut above the rest and should be in your heavy rotation now — and later. Be sure to let us know what your favorites are.
Chris Brown: Indigo
Soundz, Scott Storch and OG Parker helm the production on this infectious offering from Breezy’s latest stimulus package. Cascading over 808s, the Virginia native gets his groove on and turns in an infectious introductory cut.
H.E.R. makes an appearance alongside Brown on this marquee number from Indigo, which finds the pair adding to this year’s list of blockbuster duets. Produced by Cardiak and Hitmaka, the instrumental draws listeners to the bedroom, as Breezy and Gabi give us the happy ending we’ve all been waiting for.
Dem Jointz flips a sample of Alicia Myers’ “I Want To Thank You” to craft the sound-bed for this jam. Featuring adlibs from Lil Jon, this club-ready banger is sure to rack up continuous spins in short order.
Mustard: Perfect Ten
Mustard and GYLTTRYP play maestro on this high-powered single from the former’s latest collection. Quavo, Offset and Takeoff lend their talents to the proceedings, gifting Mustard with an introductory track that is destined for routine replay.
The ambiance is rich on this collaboration, which finds Mustard phoning in a lineup of superstars. Featuring YG, Tyga, A$AP Rocky and A$AP Ferg; this track is primed for continuous spins, and captures Harlem and Los Angeles colliding.
Nipsey Hussle continues to live in spirit on this bluesy salvo. As the closing cut on the album, this offering ends the proceedings on a high note when Neighborhood Nip says motivational words for our respective marathons.
Freddie Gibbs & Madlib: Bandana
Triumphant trumpets set the tone for this epic rhyme spill from Gary, Indiana’s finest. Produced by Madlib, Gibbs spits poetry that’ll definitely keep you entertained.
The lap of luxury is felt on this standout offering from Gibbs’ latest album. Gliding over a backdrop provided by Madlib, Gibbs turns in one of the LP’s stronger tracks.
Piano keys get tickled on this hit, which finds Indiana’s favorite gangster teaming up with some hip hop greats. With appearances made by Yasiin Bey and Black Thought, this delightful ditty mixes top-notch lyricism with a riveting soundscape.
