Serena Williams gets her own Wheaties box

  /  06.26.2019

Serena Williams has been breaking down boundaries and racking up W’s for the better part of the past two decades.

Her legendary reputation as one of the best tennis players in the world has been hard-earned, making it no surprise that she now has another new milestone achievement to celebrate.

As announced on Tuesday (June 25), the 37-year-old athlete has finally been honored with her own Wheaties cereal box for the first time in her career.

“In 2001, Wheaties paid homage to a true champion and an icon by putting her on the cover of a Wheaties Box. Althea Gibson was the FIRST Black Woman tennis player to be on the box. Today, I am honored to be the second,” Williams posted on Instagram, celebrating the news that General Mills is recognizing her on their iconic cereal box.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion is the first tennis player to be featured on a Wheaties box since Andre Agassi in 2004, and is also the fourth in the sport overall.

“I have dreamt of this since I was a young woman and it’s an honor to join the ranks of some of America’s most decorated athletes,” she added in a statement. “I hope my image on this iconic orange box will inspire the next generation of girls and athletes to dream big.”

Other athletes who have been featured on the front of the “breakfast of champions” box include Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Tiger Woods and Michael Phelps, among others.

“We mocked up a few boxes with images for Serena and her team to select from, and it was a unanimous choice to go with that shot — and that white dress — was it!” General Mills brand experience manager Taylor Gessell said in a statement. “It truly signifies a championship moment.”
