YNW Melly says he should be freed from jail because he turned himself in

YNW Melly, who was arrested in February of this year, is facing two first-degree murder charges and is currently awaiting trial from behind bars in Florida.

According to freshly-filed court documents obtained by publications such as Complex and XXL, the rapper’s legal team is asking their client be released from jail on bond, arguing that the 20-year-old is not a flight risk.

While YNW Melly was previously denied bond shortly after his arrest, his attorneys are asking the court to consider revisiting the matter given that he was the one who turned himself in. The legal documents also note that the entirety of his friends and family reside in the area, therefore proving he’d have no reason to flee.

“The Defendant poses no flight risk, as he knew what the charges were pending against him and he still chose to self-surrender,” the documents read. “If he wanted to run, he would have ran when learning of the misidentification of the other individual that was arrested at the venue in the District of Columbia.”

What the court docs allude to is how after the arrest warrant was issued, federal authorities ended up arresting someone misidentified as Melly. His lawyers argue that if he was going to take advantage of the possibility of leaving the state, he would have already done so.

In addition to asking for their client to be released on bond, the filing also addresses the lyrics to Melly’s hit single, “Murder On My Mind.” The rapper’s song was already used against him in a previous case for aggravated assault and battery, and his lawyers believe such will be repeated again.

“The defense anticipates that the prosecution will attempt to use the same song and lyrics in the same manner for the above referenced case,” the document states.

As previously reported, prosecutors believe that Melly shot and killed his two friends, YNW Juvy (Chris Thomas) and YNW Sakchaser (Anthony Williams), later staging the incident to look like a drive-by. His associate, YNW Bortlen (Cortlen Henry), is also facing the double murder charge.

Additionally, the new documents, Melly’s lawyers further proclaim the rapper’s innocence, claiming there is no murder weapon, no witnesses, no DNA evidence and no motive.

If convicted, YNW Melly could potentially face the death penalty given the severity of the crimes and Florida’s laws.
