Prosecutors charge R. Kelly with 11 new counts of sexual assault and abuse

On Thursday (May 30), it was revealed that court records show prosecutors in Chicago have filed a new series of sex assault charges against R. Kelly. The 11 additional felony counts against the singer are reportedly the most serious he has faced yet.

According to the Chicago Sun Times, the new case charges the embattled R&B star with four counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, two counts of criminal sexual assault by force, two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, and three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse against a victim between the ages of 13 to 16. The four counts of aggravated criminal assault are designated as Class X felonies and carry a potential sentence of up to 30 years in prison.

As reported, Kelly is set to appear in court on the next case next week on June 6.

The singer’s attorney, Steve Greenberg, issued a comment on the string of new charges, stating, “We’ll see what the charges are, and we’ll proceed accordingly. I know this much: it’s old. They’re allegations from years ago.”

As pointed out by the Sun Times, the four cases filed in February against the singer were entered as lower-level felonies with maximum sentences of up to seven years. At the time of this report, R. Kelly is free on a $1 million bond following his previous indictment.

In addition to the new charges being filed against the singer, it was also reported that on Wednesday (May 29) alleged victims of Kelly gave testimonies to a federal grand jury.

According to TMZ, sources close to the safeguarded legal proceedings claim that multiple witnesses alleged that the singer not only provided travel to underage girls for sexual intentions but also paid off an alleged victim so that they wouldn’t testify against him in his 2008 child pornography trial.

R. Kelly was acquitted of all charges at the time. However, new testimony from one of the witnesses could lead to further charges of obstruction of justice. At the time of the highly publicized trial, the singer’s goddaughter did not testify, despite prosecutors’ claim that she appeared in a sex tape that was submitted into evidence, resulting in his eventual acquittal.

As reported, the federal grand jury is also looking into accusations of witness intimidation and other threats, as well as the claim that Kelly and his team allegedly sent alleged victims on vacation coinciding with the trial’s duration so they would not be available if called to testify.

R. Kelly continues to maintain his innocence, claiming that the allegations against him are simply the devil at work.
