Offset cleared of charges in phone-smashing incident

Earlier this month, a felony arrest warrant was issued for Offset stemming from an altercation that took place with a fan at an area Target in Georgia at the end of the month.

On Thursday (May 30), the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that the Migos rapper won’t be charged in the aftermath of the incident, which was captured on video and soon went viral.

As previously reported, 18-year-old Junior Gibbins made an attempt to film Offset and interact with him on camera while shopping at Target, prompting the rapper to allegedly smack the iPhone out of his hands. After the situation, Gibbins moved to press charges and due to the valued cost of the damaged iPhone 8, the felony label was attached and an arrest warrant issued.

Gibbons claimed he simply wanted Offset to replace the phone, which is why he chose to move forward with filing a report. As pointed out by Offset’s attorney, the teenager didn’t take action until after the situation had gained traction on social media.

“This incident, which took place as Mr. Cephus was simply trying to buy items for his youngest child, was not reported to police for four days,” his lawyer Drew Findling said in a statement at the time. “This so-called ‘victim’ instead took to social media for an extended 15 minutes of fame. There has been absolutely no investigation and nothing has been shown to indicate Mr. Cephus is the cause of any damage to this person’s property. The felony warrant is disgraceful and should be dismissed immediately.”

According to reports, the felony charge of damage to property was dropped due to both parties being able to reach a mutual agreement outside of court.

The phone-smacking situation sparked a heated debate on social media, with some arguing that fans should not feel entitled to documenting and taking photos of encounters with celebrities in shared public spaces, while others noted that the “Clout” rapper was out of line for his reaction.

As reported, while the felony charge has been dropped, Offset is still facing a pending felony gun charge stemming from his July 2018 arrest.
