The sudden death of battle rapper Tech 9 sent a shockwave of grief amongst the hip hop community earlier this year, with artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Mad Skillz, Lupe Fiasco, Tech N9ne, Meek Mill and Lloyd Banks, among others, sharing heartfelt tributes on social media.
On Thursday (May 30), just over two months since the beloved Philadelphia rapper passed, the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office released a final determination in his death.
As reported by Philadelphia magazine, Tech 9’s death has officially been ruled a suicide. The cause of death reportedly was an overdose of diphenhydramine, the common antihistamine known as Benadryl. The ruling was determined by first deputy coroner Alexander Balacki.
Tech 9 passed away on March 24, the day before he was scheduled to appear in court for an arrangement hearing. As previously reported, prior to his death, the 32-year-old was facing charges of possession of child pornography, indecent assault, indecent exposure and corruption of minors stemming from a Jan. 5 arrest.
According to court documents, he had been arrested after being accused that he had assaulted the daughter of his girlfriend.
His court-appointed lawyer, Cowanis L. Duckett, gave a statement after Tech 9’s arrest.
“Circumstances surrounding the timing of the actual accusation seem to me to be an act of retaliation rather than … an actual incident that happened,” he shared at the time.
As reported, a judge dropped two indecent assault charges at a preliminary hearing focusing on the matter.
After Tech 9 died, his father raised close to $30,000 via a fundraising campaign to cover funeral expenses. However, after news broke of the nature of his arrest, some fans asked for their money back.
