DJ Khaled had everyone at 30 Rockefeller Plaza on their feet during the season finale of “Saturday Night Live.”
In support of his new album Father of Asahd, Khaled served as the musical guest and brought out the who’s who of today’s hip hop and R&B to perform two medleys of songs from the album.
In the first performance, Lil Wayne and Big Sean performed the Chris Brown-assisted “Jealous.” Meek Mill, J. Balvin, Lil Baby and Jeremih joined the party to perform “You Stay.”
As the second performance began, Khaled sported a Nipsey Hussle hoodie as SZA kicked off the second set with “Just Us,” Meek returned to the stage and hyped the crowd up while rapping “Weather the Storm.” Meek wore a chain with Hussle’s image in the center.
The performance then turned sentimental, when the blue strobe lights stopped and an image of Nipsey Hussle began to etch in blue on the wall. Khaled introduced John Legend as he played the piano and sang the hook to the first single from Father of Asahd, “Higher.”
Everyone that performed with Khaled throughout the night then appeared on the stage as Legend continued to sing. A snippet of Hussle’s verse play before Khaled proclaimed, “Long live Nipsey Hussle. The marathon continues.”
Khaled dropped the video for “Higher” on Friday along with the highly anticipated album. Before the release, Khaled revealed that all proceeds from the song will go to Nipsey’s children.
After the video’s release, Legend tweeted, “Proud to be a part of this inspiring record with DJ Khaled and @NipseyHussle. We lost him too soon.”
From now until May 20, Khaled will drop eight videos from the album including a visual for each song performed on “Saturday Night Live” and the Cardi B-led song “Wish, Wish.” On May 21, Khaled will debut his documentary “Father Of Asahd: The Album Experience” on Tidal.
