MusiCares has launched the Mac Miller Legacy Fund to help young people who are struggling with substance abuse.

Originally founded at the Pittsburg Foundation by Miller’s family, the Mac Miller Fund will give MusiCares a $50,000 grant to help establish the Mac Miller Legacy Fund. The news was revealed on Thursday (May 16), during the annual MusiCares Concert for Recovery. Vince Staples—who was a close friend of Miller’ s—made the announcement during a tribute of the late rapper.

“These grants celebrate Malcolm’s life and legacy by funding two respected organizations that provide opportunities for young people to realize their talents and potential,” Miller’s family said in a statement following the announcement. “It’s critically important to our family to fund a safety net for artists and musicians who are struggling with substance addiction. No life should be cut short for lack of expert help.”

Launched by the Recording Academy in 1993, MusiCares is a charity that provides a “safety net to music people in times of need, offering confidential preventative, recovery and emergency programs to address financial, medical and personal health issues.” Over the last fiscal year, the organization has provided more than $6.5 million to assist 8,600 music industry members, which was the largest amount of funds and clients served in a single year since inception.

The Mac Miller Fund also gave a $50,000 grant to Pittsburgh’s Hope Academy of Music and the Arts. The Hope Academy will use its award to expand its after-school Suzuki Music Program.

“Each year Hope Academy has a positive impact on the lives of 365 young people and their families by giving them the opportunity to study and perform dance and music,” the academy’s director Linda Addlespurger said to CBS 2

Currently, there are 40 students enrolled in the music program, and thanks to the grant, it is expected to double next year.
