With so many new rap albums, mixtapes, EPs and songs dropping every week; knowing which ones are worth your time can be a challenge. But no worries, we’ll help smooth out the process with “Now N’ Laters,” a column that highlights the hottest new releases of the week and the songs you’ll want to listen to now — and later.

This week’s slate of new projects include the return of one of the biggest power brokers in hip hop, a timely release from one of the most talked about newcomers today, and an eclectic body of work from one of the more forward-thinking creatives in rap. With over a year having passed since his last effort, Grateful, DJ Khaled emerges with its long-awaited follow-up, Father Of Asahd, another star-studded collection from rap’s ultimate fixer. With her music, as well as her curves, garnering rave reviews for the better part of this year, Megan Thee Stallion looks to capitalize on the buzz surrounding her name with Fever, the Texan’s first full-length offering since her last release, Tina Snow. Last seen racking up Grammy nods with his critically acclaimed album Flower Boy; Tyler, the Creator serves up another genre-blending body of work with IGOR, the rapper’s first release in nearly two years.

With all three releases getting airplay and dominating the conversation, REVOLT shares our critics’ picks for the three songs from each project that stand a cut above the rest and should be in your heavy rotation now — and later. Be sure to let us know what your favorites are.

DJ Khaled: Father Of Asahd

“Wish Wish”

Cardi B and 21 Savage pair up on this lively number from DJ Khaled’s latest compilation. Produced by Tay Keith, who continues to supply the heavyweights with raucous compositions, this standout offering arrives right on time to assault speakers as we creep toward the warmer months of the year.

DJ Khaled reveals his ace in the whole with this infectious collaboration, which appears destined to be added to his list of radio-friendly ditties. Led by Chris Brown on the hook, with additional guest spots by Lil Wayne and Big Sean, this track is among the album’s more enthralling selections because of its buoyant vibe that ensures it will be a staple for your summertime festivities.

As the hip hop world continues to mourn Nipsey Hussle, DJ Khaled presents the late rapper’s first posthumous appearance with this soul-stirring single. Crafting a track powered by a glorious vocal sample and live instrumentation, STREETRUNNER and Tarik Azzouz put forth a grand backdrop for costar John Legend to glide over, giving us a reminder that “the marathon continues” with this uplifting salvo.

Megan Thee Stallion: Fever

Megan Thee Stallion aims for the jugular while addressing her rivals on this up-tempo anthem. Unleashing her fury atop rollicking 808s, the Houston rep channels her aggression into a menacing selection.

“Simon Says”

Megan Thee Stallion plays twerk master on this frisky number, as rap’s latest boss lady commands all the women in her vicinity to bust it open. Featuring an appearance from Juicy J, who compliments Megan’s musings with a raunchy verse of his own, this party-starter is a safe bet to infiltrate strip clubs and dance-floors nationwide and beyond.

“Money Good”

Deposits and withdrawals are the topic of conversation on this highlight from Megan Thee Stallion’s latest batch of hits, as the southern bombshell revels in the trappings of her carefree lifestyle. Produced by DJ Chose, this exuberant salvo captures Thee Stallion in all of her cocksure splendor and accounts for one of the more memorable moments on the project.

Tyler, the Creator: IGOR

One highlight from Tyler, the Creator’s latest musical endeavor is this serene collaborative effort, which captures the Cali rep’s melodic sensibilities. Joined by Playboi Carti, Charlie Wilson, and Devonte Hynes; Tyler layers this breezy offering with harmonic vocal runs, piano keys and airy synths, resulting in a relaxed soundscape that’s a testament to the wild card’s creative genius.

The first track unveiled from IGOR, this piano-driven cut is of the conceptual variety, as the Odd Future mastermind likens himself to a weapon of mass destruction. Flipping a sample of “Bound” by Ponderosa Twins Plus One into a layered backdrop, Tyler volleys couplets amid vocal wails, accounting for arguably the most exhilarating moment on the quirky visionary’s latest collection.

Shirking traditional rap formats for the lion’s share of this experimental long player; Tyler, the Creator presents the most conventional selection on the album with this frantic composition. Pairing distorted break beats with searing synths, Tyler crafts an expansive hodgepodge of sound that combines vintage boom-bap with futuristic vibes.
