A public memorial service for John Singleton is set at his alma mater
The beloved filmmaker passed away last month.
John Singleton was laid to rest in a private ceremony for his family and friends last week. Now, the beloved filmmaker will receive a memorial at his alma mater, the University of Southern California, on May 21.
The 3-hour event, beginning at 11 am local time, is expected to pay tribute to Singleton’s life and legacy. Invites will be sent out for “a few thousand” fans to attend, TMZ reports. While specific details are still being arranged, several celebrities have already RSVP’d.
Taraji P. Henson, Tyrese, Nia Long, Ludacris, Ving Rhames, Ice Cube, Tina Knowles, and Congresswoman Maxine Waters were just a few who attended his private service in Los Angeles on May 6. The “Empire” actress later revealed she skipped the Met Gala in New York City to “bury my dear sweet friend.”
Singleton passed away at the age of 51 after suffering a major stroke last month. His death certificate listed the cause of death as “acute ischemic stroke” and revealed Singleton was taken off of life support on April 28, one day before his family shared the news with the public.
The Oscar-nominated director was honored at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this month when his directorial debut, 1991’s Boyz n the Hood, was screened for free at the annual fair.
On Sunday (May 5), TMZ confirmed Singleton will remain the executive producer of his hit FX series, “Snowfall,” even after his untimely passing. In a statement, John Landgraf, chairman of FX Networks, said the network was “honored and fortunate” to have worked with the acclaimed director.
“Today we lost an incredibly talented artist, leader, activist, partner, and friend — far too soon,” he shared. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.”
