Earlier this month, thousands gathered in Los Angeles to honor Nipsey Hussle during a Celebration of Life ceremony, with an array of tributes continuing to surface daily.

Among the countless promising to look out for others like the beloved rapper always had, and ensure that the marathon continues, is his sister, Samantha Smith, who is now taking action to keep her word.

According to a new report from TMZ (April 30), Smith has filed for legal guardianship of one of his children. As reported, she has filed legal documents with the L.A. County Superior Court and is asking for the opportunity to be legally responsible for Nipsey’s 7-year-old daughter, Emani Asghedom.

Sources close to the situation say that Smith believes Emani’s biological mother is unable to care for her and that prior to his death, Nipsey was the primary caretaker.

Smith says she has played a close role in the care of Emani throughout her entire life and wants to “to ensure the continued stability for Emani and ensure that she will be able to maintain her current and ongoing relationship” with Nipsey’s family.

At the top of this month, Smith took to Instagram to publicly mourn the loss of her brother. During her heartfelt reflection, she promised to do everything she can to “carry out [his] vision” and care for their loved ones.

“You’ve taught me so much,” she wrote. “You hold me down through everything. I got Lauren. I got Emani. I got Kross. I got Sam, he is my responsibility now. He is my big little brother. I got mommy and Granny and Pop. You gave me so many tools. You gave me so much insight. We will talk every second of everyday and I am here to carry out your vision. Ermias God Will Rise. I love you forever and I will cry forever. You are my lifeline as long as I am here you are too.”

Nipsey’s other child, 2-year-old Kross, is not the subject of the conservatorship. He and Lauren London welcomed their baby boy together in 2016.

At the time of this report, a judge has yet to rule on Samantha Smith’s petition for guardianship.
