UPDATE: John Singleton's daughter breaks silence on coma reports
The ‘Boyz n the Hood’ director remains hospitalized.
John Singleton’s daughter, Cleopatra Singleton, spoke to The New York Times on Friday (April 26) and confirmed that previous reports of her father being in a coma are not true.
“My father is not in a coma,” she told the publication. “My father had a stroke on April 17, 2019, and at this point, we are optimistic about a full recovery.”
Last week, news broke that John Singleton suffered a stroke while at the hospital. In the days after his family confirmed that the acclaimed director was under great medical care, a new report shows that the situation is unfortunately much more serious than initially revealed.
As reported on Thursday (April 25), the Boyz N the Hood director is currently in a coma. Per TMZ, the 51-year-old’s condition was made known in a court filing made by his mother, Shiela Ward. As revealed in the court documents, she is requesting that a judge appoint her as his temporary conservator so that she can make medical and financial decisions on her son’s behalf.
According to the docs, the director is “unable to properly provide for his personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter” at this time and remains hospitalized.
As reported, Singleton suffered “a major stroke” eight days ago. His family previously announced that he had a stroke on April 17 but did not share additional details at that time, including the seriousness of his condition.
At the time of this report, it remains unclear whether or not the temporary conservatorship has been granted.
According to the legal documents, Ward noted how her son was engaged in several business projects when he decided to seek medical treatment after experiencing some problems with his legs. TMZ also reports the movie executive and educator was preparing to “sign a lucrative settlement agreement” prior to suffering the stroke. Given that he does not have any medical directives, Ward is now seeking the conservatorship.
In a statement with TMZ last week, his family requested that fans respect their privacy during this time, as well as thanked others for their outpouring of prayers, well wishes and support.
Singleton, whose catalog includes films such as the Oscar-nominated Boyz N the Hood, Poetic Justice, 2 Fast 2 Furious and more, has been teaching a course at the USC Film School titled “Film and Culture.” His most recent projects include the TV series “Snowfall,” “The People vs. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story,” “Empire” and “Billions.” FX has renewed “Snowfall” for a third season, which began earlier this month.
“We are sad to learn the news of John’s condition, but we know he’s a fighter. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at FX and his Snowfall family are with him and we are hopeful for a complete and speedy recovery,” FX Networks said in a statement over the weekend.
This story will be updated as more information becomes available regarding John Singleton’s condition.
