Report: Kanye West considering starting a church
West’s connection to religion has long been documented.
Following his Sunday Service at Coachella last weekend (April 21), Kanye West is reportedly considering starting his own place of worship.
Sources close to the “Jesus Walks” rapper told People the 41-year-old is “extremely passionate about his faith “and wants to share it “more regularly” with his devout fans. “He spends a lot of time studying and praying, and wants to share his journey,” the source added.
West’s connection to religion has long been documented in his music and in print. Earlier this year, the father of three and one on the way kicked off his weekly Sunday Service event as part of a “healing experience,” wife, Kim Kardashian, told Elle.
“It’s just music; there’s no sermon. It’s definitely something he believes in — Jesus — and there’s a Christian vibe. But there’s no preaching. It’s just a very spiritual Christian experience,” Kardashian shared.
Although his Sunday Services were initially closed off to the public, Ye now reportedly sees the “value” in opening up the event to all. His Coachella event was attended by over 50,000 people, TMZ reports. The Yandhi rapper also sold “church clothes” at the Easter service for prices listed between $50 and $225.
“It was completely sincere,” the source told People. “Everything about it was planned out, because he wanted to encourage and minister to people.”
Don’t expect Yeezy’s church to be a traditional one though. “Instead, it would be a way to point people to Jesus through the arts and through a community of people who love and care for each other,” the source revealed.
“Say what you want about Kanye, but he really does want to help people who need support,” the source continued. “He understands brokenness and the need for healing, probably more than most people. He believes in the healing powers of music, but also believes that God can step in and heal people’s brokenness and their issues.”
