Russell Wilson signs $140 million contract with the Seahawks, becomes highest paid NFL player

Congrats are in order for Russell Wilson.

The Seattle Seahawks quarterback just became the highest paid NFL player after signing a 4-year extension contract worth $140 million late Monday night (April 15). According to ESPN, $65 million of that is already guaranteed as a signing bonus. The deal also includes a no-trade clause, a source told the outlet.

After closing the deal, Wilson took to Twitter to celebrate. The 30-year-old announced the news in bed alongside his wife, R&B singer Ciara. “Aye, Seattle. We got a deal,” he says in the short clip while the “Goodies” songstress cheers him on. “Go Hawks! But, I’ma see y’all in the morning. Time for y’all to go to bed,” Wilson told fans who waited up to hear if he would extend his stay with the team. Watch the adorable video ahead.

The news comes as no surprise to anyone who has followed Wilson’s NFL career. Since being selected by the Hawks in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft, Wilson has gone on to prove himself as a valuable team player. During the 2013 season, he led the team to its first Super Bowl victory in its history and has logged six Pro Bowl appearances. Seattle has also reached the playoffs 6 of the 7 years Wilson has been under center, as TMZ points out.

Last season, Wilson surpassed his previous career bests with 35 touchdown passes and a 110.9 passer rating. The proud dad also tied his career low of seven interceptions on 427 attempts, his fewest since 2013, ESPN notes.

“To Mark Rodgers, my agent & father figure… You believed in me 10 years ago when no one else would,” Wilson tweeted early Tuesday morning (April 16) after the announcement. “Thanks for being who you are as a man and friend. You are the best in the game.”

Congrats again to the quarterback!
