21 Savage's deportation hearing reportedly postponed

Following his Feb. 2019 arrest by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, 21 Savage was scheduled to appear in court this month for a hearing to determine next steps, such as if he would be able to remain in the country.

However, as revealed during a new cover story with Billboard, 21 Savage’s journey to becoming an American citizen has come to an unfortunate standstill.

During the in-depth feature, which focuses on 21 Savage’s efforts to help the youth learn more about financial literacy through his Bank Account initiative, it is noted how 21’s hearing has been postponed. According to Billboard, the hearing, which was originally scheduled for April 9, has been postponed and a new date has not yet been selected.

“They don’t have enough nondetained judges, so his case is waiting to be assigned. I can’t give anybody, even him, a date as to when that might be,” his lawyer, Charles Kuck, said about the postponement.

The rapper, who has lived in Atlanta for over a decade, has two sons and daughter, all three of whom are U.S. citizens. Given his community ties and being a father to American-born children, there is still a chance 21 Savage could obtain permanent residency. He has vocalized that is his utmost priority, vocalizing what he has gone through emotionally since undergoing the difficult process to obtaining a U.S. citizenship.

“The worst thing was sitting in there not knowing what was going to happen, or when it’s going to happen,” 21 said, speaking on his arrest. “Whenever I went to jail before, it was, ‘You’re being charged with this and going to court on this date.’ But immigration ain’t like that. You’re just being held.”

Elsewhere during the cover story, 21 Savage discusses his efforts to help serve students and marginalized youth in Atlanta. Beginning this June, the rapper’s Bank Account campaign will dedicate its resources to helping secure 150 jobs for at-risk teens.
