J. Cole’s sold-out Dreamville Festival was the place to be on Saturday night (April 6). In addition to the epic lineup, the inaugural event also featured touching tributes to the late Nipsey Hussle who was tragically gunned down in front of his clothing store in Los Angeles on Sunday (March 31).

Many of the evening’s performers, including Big Sean, Teyana Taylor, and 21 Savage acknowledged the Los Angeles native during their sets. “I wanna talk to Nipsey too because even though I know we just lost him, I also know that the body is a shell and I can still feel his energy. I can still feel his consciousness,” Big Sean said at the show in Raleigh, North Carolina. “Nipsey, I just wanna say bro, thank you for teaching everybody so much. Thank you for the inspiration.”

During his set, Big Sean included Hussle in a freestyle calling his murder “f—ked up” and “sickening.” He also disclosed that he had planned to meet up with the 33-year-old before his death, but now experiences guilt that he didn’t. Additionally, the Detroit rapper noted Hussle’s age at the time of his passing, saying, “You died the same age as Jesus, both God’s children.”

After Taylor dedicated “Gonna Love Me,” a song from her sophomore album, to Hussle and his girlfriend Lauren London, Cole followed up with his own heartfelt tribute. The KOD rapper performed “Love Yourz,” a song off his 2014 album, Forest Hills Drive, while images of Hussle (real name Ermias Joseph Asghedom) played on the screen in the background.

“Rest in peace, Nipsey Hussle. You a f—kin’ legend,” he said, adding his voice to the collective of fans and celebrities still mourning Hussle’s untimely death.

Eric Holder, the 29-year-old suspect involved in the shooting, was arrested and charged with Hussle’s murder last week Thursday (April 4). He has pleaded not guilty and is currently being held on $5 million bail.
