Days after Oklahoma City Thunder player and Los Angeles native Russell Westbrook dedicated his historic triple-double in honor of Nipsey Hussle, the late rapper’s memory and legacy continues to be represented on the basketball court.
Nipsey was a beloved community leader, Grammy-nominated rapper, father, entrepreneur and philanthropist whose life was taken far too soon. He was shot and killed on Sunday (March 31) and in the days that have followed, countless fans across the nation have continuously paid tribute in a plethora of forms and methods.
The Los Angeles Lakers held a moment of silence prior to taking on the Golden State Warriors.
“Entrepreneur, rapper, and community activist Nipsey Hussle tragically passed away at the age of 33,” the announcer told the crowd at the Staples Center. “From his work within local schools, creating business in LA, and promoting better life choices, Nipsey had a lasting impact on bettering our entire Los Angeles community. Please join the Warriors, the Lakers, and the entire NBA family in a moment of silence for the late Nipsey Hussle.”
In addition to showing love in the form of a dedicated moment of silence, the Lakers also displayed a jersey with Nipsey’s name on it, as surrounded by signatures from the team.
LeBron James is also doing his part to make sure his friend’s presence remains felt and respected on the court and in the city alike. The renowned NBA player showed up to the arena wearing a shirt bearing the lifelong Lakers fan’s face as a way to thank Nipsey for his support and encouragement over the years.
A portrait of the late rapper was also added to a mural in Los Angeles alongside King James, adding to the ongoing outpouring of love Nipsey is being met with amid his tragic murder.
