J. Cole is the latest cover star of XXL along with his Dreamville labelmates and inside the Spring 2019 issue, the outspoken rapper finally addressed his controversial decision to support the late rapper, XXXTentacion, who had a history of domestic abuse before his death in 2018.

“[W]e live in a world where everybody wants to be so quick to cancel somebody,” he told the outlet. “But at the same time, people condemn the criminal justice system, which is entirely the cancellation system. To me, both of those ideas are f—ked up, like, “We’re throwing you away.” Both of those mentalities miss the mark, which is, people need to be healed.”

Cole continued, “You’re looking to punish me—and don’t get it twisted, what I did was a punishable offense—but where are you talking about healing me? Where are you going to show me some compassion and some f—king love?”

According to the “Middle Child” rapper, instead of cancel culture, he’s in favor of “accountability culture.” “I’m cool with that. Even for myself,” he said. “Everyone needs to be accountable. I don’t mind if someone got something to say about me or what I said or did. That’s all good. But cancel culture? I don’t cancel nobody.”

Cole went on to explain that even if he knew what XXXTentacion did, he wouldn’t have cut him off. He told XXL he would have questioned the now-deceased 20-year-old about his actions, including the “sick things” he was accused of. “I would’ve asked a series of questions that hopefully would’ve sparked something in his mind. It would’ve been towards the direction of healing,” Cole shared.

The 34-year-old also took into account the alleged victim, XXXTentacion’s girlfriend at the time, saying, “Especially the girl that he did all that s—t to—she absolutely needs healing.” The North Carolina native argued that healing is the only way to fully rehabilitate a person.

“It’s like, I’m just going to discard you and throw you in the trash and forget about you? That’s what they doing in the prison system. That’s what we’re actually fighting to stop,” he stated. “We’re trying to fight the fact that prisons offer no rehabilitation and that people come out even worse off than they went in.”
