After reports broke that R. Kelly’s attorney was filing a motion seeking permission for the singer to fly by private jet to Dubai so he could perform and therefore make money to go toward his child support payments, it appears as though there has been a change of plans.
As reported by the Chicago Tribune, the singer, who was indicted on 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse last month, and his lawyer, Steven Greenburg, instead requested on Friday (March 22) that the ruling Cook County judge hold off on the motion. No additional explanation for the delay was offered in court, save for expressing that he wanted to provide additional materials to Judge Lawrence Flood.
The judge set the next court hearing for May 7, which is well after the singer had been hoping to travel to the United Arab Emirates in order to perform in April. It is not yet clear if the 52-year-old will be able granted the opportunity to legally leave the state of Illinois amid the ongoing legal battle.
“I think the judge would be in a better position to rule in our favor if we had a little more detail in the motion,” Greenburg shared with reporters after the hearing. “There’s still a chance he could go to Dubai, sure.”
Greenburg initially began fighting on behalf of his client, who is currently bound to staying local as a condition of his bond. He explained that Kelly has been struggling financially and has been unable to find work in the states. According to the filing, Kelly is requesting permission to travel overseas for work purposes in order to pay off his increasing expenses, such as child support, unpaid rent and legal fees.
Interestingly enough, attorney Doug Anton, who said he represents the singer’s entertainment-related matters, told reporters that the singer has been offered “dozens of opportunities” to perform in recent weeks. Anton reportedly shared he has compiled about 150 emails sent to the singer that include “offers to perform in just every place possible you can think of.”
In related news, TMZ reports that the previously anticipated meeting between his girlfriend Joycelyn Savage and her family is currently off the table. The Savage family, who claims their daughter has been brainwashed by the singer, initially planned to bring a psychologist with them to evaluate their daughter, who has been separated from them for years now.
At the time of this report, it remains unclear why Kelly and his team decided to pull out of coordinating a meeting between the two parties. It initially had been promised in the press that there would be an effort made to accommodate the request for a sit-down, even detailing the importance of landing on a “neutral location” to meet.
As revealed in footage captured following Friday’s hearing, Kelly’s publicist dodged answering questions pertaining to the possible reunion.
