After publicly talking about his financial hardships during a recent explosive interview with Gayle King, R. Kelly is now seeking permission to be able to leave the country amid his ongoing legal battles.

As reported by the Chicago Tribute, the R&B singer’s lawyer, Steven Greenberg, is set to file a motion on Friday (March 22) that, if granted, would allow Kelly to fly via private jet to Dubai next month in order to perform a series of previously scheduled concerts.

R. Kelly is currently facing 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse against four young women (three of whom were underage at the time of the alleged illicit activity). Due to the severity of the ongoing case, a judge ordered the singer to surrender his passport.

The singer, who has pleaded not guilty to all charges and continues to maintain his innocence, was previously scheduled to perform a string of shows between April 17 and April 19 in Dubai. He was previously slated to perform in Germany but both of those concert dates have been canceled.

Given that Kelly has found himself in an unfortunate position regarding his finances, his lawyer is expected to argue that Kelly’s work will require him to travel and if the motion is not passed, it will be a “hardship” on the singer’s children as he is depending on these gigs to make money to pay off child support and other expenses.

“Mr. Kelly has a job that requires he be allowed to travel,” Greenberg wrote in the filing. “He cannot work, and consequently cannot making a living if he is confined to Illinois, or even the United States.” The filing also notes how Kelly has “struggled of late” to pay his mandated child support and other expenses related to his family, adding, “Denying him the opportunity to work would be a hardship on his children.”

The 52-year-old was recently arrested and jailed after failing to comply with making his court-ordered child support payments. At the time of his arrest, the singer owed $161,000 in back payments, which was later paid on his behalf.

At this time, Kelly, who is currently out on bond, remains barred from leaving the state of Illinois as a condition of his release. Kelly is slated to appear on Friday at the Leighton Criminal Court Building where Judge Lawrence Flood will rule on the matter.
