Missy Elliott continues to impart wisdom, inspire the masses and uphold her own legacy with grace.

After making history as the first female hip hop artist to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame; the veteran producer, songwriter, rapper and singer has been awarded yet another exciting accolade to celebrate.

As announced by the Berklee College of Music, the Virginia native will be recognized for her multifaceted talents this spring and will be awarded an honorary doctorate from the esteemed institution alongside Justin Timberlake and Alex Lacamoire.

According to a statement on Berklee’s website, Elliott and her fellow honorees “are being recognized for their achievements and influences in music, and for their enduring global impact.”

The ceremony will take place at Boston University’s Agganis Arena on May 11. To add to the festivities, each honored artist will have their music performed by students during the ceremony. Unfortunately, the event will not be made available to the public.

Past honorary doctorate recipients include Duke Ellington (who was the first to be recognized by the music school in 1971), Aretha Franklin, Quincy Jones, B.B. King, Smokey Robinson, Loretta Lynn, Carole King, Willie Nelson, George Clinton and Lionel Richie, among others.

In addition to being honored for her past contributions, the five-time Grammy award winner is reportedly busy at work on new music. She announced that she’s been getting back into the studio last year and explained why she was hesitant to share the update with fans.

“For so long I was hesitant to put out music in fear no 1 would get it because people said music has changed & my sound been so different but NOW IM LIKE hey bump it make music that feels good to me let me Get y’all asses dancing again,” she said at the time.

Elliott’s last studio album was 2005’s The Cookbook, adding to the anticipation for her long-awaited return.

Congrats to Missy Elliott on being selected to receive an honorary doctorate from the Berklee College of Music!
