There is some excellent news for Keak da Sneak in his weapons possession case. Keak was scheduled to start a 16-month prison sentence on Feb. 7, but after a petition on Change.org garnered over 40,000 signatures, a judge has granted Keak an additional 60 days to get healthy enough to serve time.

“New update. They gave me 60 days to try and improve my health then turn myself in,” Keak said in an Instagram post on Thursday (Feb. 7). “I want to thank everyone for making some noise and signing the petition it made a big difference!!”

The 41-year-old rapper was involved in two shootings in 2017. The first was a failed robbery attempt in January 2017, and the second, in August 2017, left him physically disabled after being shot in the torso eight times. “My health is not good,” he told KQED. “I know they’re not gonna give me the treatment I need in prison. I’ve been to jail before, and once you get behind these walls, they have no compassion. You have to be on your dying bed for them to give you some assistance.”

The petition started by his wife, Dee Bowens, requested for Keak to have house arrest as an alternative sentence because of the family’s concerns of Keak not receiving the proper medical care while incarcerated. According to Bowens, Keak receives “crucial medical care” from a nurse that comes out to his home three times a week.

“The chances of him becoming a flight risk is far and few considering he cannot walk,” the petition said. “Prison is not the right place for this man. Prison is dangerous & dirty! He cannot defend himself and has already been the victim of 2 shootings.”

Keak now has until April 11 to turn himself in. He is expected to continue to fight for house arrest in the meantime.
