Someone pretended to be Kanye West and got away with close to $1 million. True story.
According to TMZ, a former friend and associate of G.O.O.D. music decided to book a performance for West in German fashion designer Philipp Plein’s upcoming New York Fashion Week show on Monday, Feb. 11. The only thing is West never agreed to it. The scammer in question allegedly pretended to be West’s rep while negotiating a seven-figure payout and somehow it all worked out. Plein wired an advance payment of $900,000 into a bank account in exchange for West’s appearance.
As it now stands, West will not be attending Plein’s event next week, yet the money has already been cleared from the account. The savvy con artist also forged West’s signature on the contract to make the million dollar deal appear even more legit, TMZ reports. No word yet on what Plein plans to do to make up for West’s absence. The designer hasn’t addressed the hoax, but it is likely he will seek legal action over the fraudulent transaction.
On Wednesday, Feb. 6, Kim Kardashian addressed the reports floating around about her husband performing at NYFW this year. “He’s not performing at any fashion show this season. Just a rumor,” she tweeted one fan.
While some spectators are still holding out hope that West may be keeping things under wraps in order to make a surprise pop up at NYFW, it appears the dust has settled on that.
The father of three is currently busy working on his ninth studio album, Yandhi, due out sometime this year. In addition to releasing new music, West is also expecting his fourth child, a baby boy, via surrogacy later this year. Kardashian confirmed the happy news in January during an appearance on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.”
