As Jussie Smollett continues to recover and gradually make his return back to his routine (and to the stage), more harrowing details have emerged surrounding his reported assault.

According to the police report that was filed in Chicago, the “Empire” actor initially “did not want to report” the incident and a friend called authorities on his behalf.

The report, which was secured via a Freedom of Information Act request and obtained by Chicago’s ABC7 Eyewitness News, states that a 60-year-old friend called the police for Smollett, explaining that the actor “did not want to report offense however he believed it to be in the best interest to.”

According to the report, police officers who responded to the call found the 36-year-old actor at his home with a stained shirt and a “white rope draped around” his neck. The report also reveals that the assailants used their hands, feet and teeth as weapons in the assault. It also includes the detail that the attackers poured an unknown chemical, suspected to be bleach, on him.

The police report also corroborates news reports that Smollett told authorities he received “hate mail at his place of work” on Jan. 22. He received the letter, which was composed of magazine cut-out letters and read “you will die black f-g,” was sent to FOX a week prior to his attack taking place.

Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi offered an update on the investigation on Monday (Feb. 4), sharing on Twitter that “additional security cameras have been located and footage is being downloaded and reviewed.” Images of two “persons of interest” were released last week. The pair have yet to be identified.

The “Empire” actor returned to the stage for the first time since reporting the attack over the weekend, performing at West Hollywood’s Troubador club on Saturday (Feb. 2).
