The recent arrest of 21 Savage by Immigration And Customs Enforcement (ICE) is no laughing matter. While the internet may have turned the shocking news into a host of memes, Grammy-nominated singer Demi Lovato learned the hard way on Sunday, Feb. 3, when she tweeted she was enjoying the jokes being made at the rapper’s expense.

“So far 21 savage memes have been my favorite part of the Super Bowl,” the 26-year-old wrote in a since-deleted tweet. Many were quick to call out the pop star for her insensitive comment, and some even went as far as bringing up her own addiction with drug abuse.

Rapper Wale was one of the many prominent voices who called out the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer for her remark. “Why is somebody freedom funny … I don’t get the joke,” he tweeted. The Nigerian-American rapper also added, “A lot of people were sending you love [and] light, prayers, etc. When people were making jokes about u [sic] at a rough time. A lot of people. Bless up.”

Lovato was quick to follow up with a response of her own clarifying that she “wasn’t making fun on anything having to do with deportation,” but instead laughing at a meme “talking about [21 Savage] writing with a feather pen.”

“Who the f*ck knew 21 was British? Literally no one,” she wrote on Instagram. “Sorry if I offended anyone. But it’s no excuse to laugh at someone’s addiction let alone their OD.”

Lovato also responded to Wale on The Shade Room calling him “salty” because she never replied to his “desperate tweets a few years ago.” Wale countered with prayers for the singer who deactivated her Twitter account shortly after adding, “I don’t kick people when they down. Go queen.”
