Maroon 5 brought out a host of special guests to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show in Atlanta on Sunday, Feb. 3. While many artists, including their “Girls Like You” collaborator Cardi B, decided to skip this year’s game in support of Colin Kaepernick, the pop-group were joined by Astroworld rapper Travis Scott and Atlanta’s very own Big Boi for the night’s biggest draw.

The band kicked things off at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium with their hits from the early 2000s, including “Harder to Breathe” and “This Love” before the biggest surprise guest, SpongeBob SquarePants, arrived to introduce Scott’s fiery and heavily-censored performance of “Sicko Mode.”

As if that weren’t enough to get the crowd going, the sight of Big Boi rolling onto the field in a Cadillac while performing “Kryptonite” surely did. The OutKast member was later joined by Sleepy Brown to perform their 2003 jam, “The Way You Move.”

“This one’s for you, Jordy,” frontman Adam Levine said at the top of the show dedicating the group’s halftime performance, which included “Girls Like You” and “She Will Be Loved,” to their late manager, Jordan Feldstein who passed away in 2017.

A shirtless Levine closed out the show with a medley of Maroon 5’s recent hits, including “Sugar” and “Moves Like Jagger,” and, as expected, the performance was ultimately met with both praise and criticism alike.

Levine took to Instagram to address the critics, writing, “When we accepted the responsibility to perform at the SBHTS, I took out my pen and just wrote. Some of the words that came to me in that moment eventually made their way onto the incredible lanterns that flew high and low tonight.”
