When the movie’s stars said, “Wakanda forever!” they really meant it. Black Panther just added to its already extensive list of record-breaking achievements with this new Oscar milestone. The critically acclaimed film just became the first superhero movie to ever be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.
This news made headlines when the 2019 Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday (Jan. 22). The Ryan Coogler-directed film; which stars the likes of Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright and more; was released in February 2017 and went on to dominate movie theaters across the country and world.
Now, it will face some fierce competition at this year’s Academy Awards. Other movies that Black Panther will be up against in the Best Picture category are Roma, Blackkklansman, The Favourite, Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book, A Star Is Born, and Vice. But, this isn’t the only category that Black Panther is nominated in.
Other categories where the movie will be battling other films include Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Production Design, Costume Design (Ruth Carter), Original Song (“All the Stars”) and Original Score (Ludwig Goransson).
The 2019 Oscars will definitely be a night to remember. There are much more firsts that the awards ceremony will include. For example, for the first time in his decades-long career, Spike Lee is now nominated in the Best Picture and Director categories for Blackkklansman. The famed filmmaker has been nominated for Oscars for previous bodies of work. However, not in the previously mentioned categories.
This year’s award ceremony is going down on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT. The event will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. The movie industry’s biggest night is fast approaching. So, be sure to tune in and watch the festivities. Hopefully, many of our favorite films will take home honors.
