As we get deeper into 2019, more rappers have been crashing the party with new releases that deserve the public’s attention. Kicking off the year with a succession of loosies, Future looks to capitalize on the momentum with Future Hndrxx Presents: The Wizrd, a collection of boisterous quick-strike cuts. With the borders of what is hip hop and R&B continuing to be blurred, James Blake continues to ingratiate himself in both arenas with Assume Form, which the British artist released in conjunction with production maestro Metro Boomin. And last, up-and-coming Floridian native YNW Mellow comes through with his sophomore mixtape, We All Shine, which looks to further establish the neophyte as a name to watch out for.
With all three releases getting airplay and dominating the conversation, REVOLT shares our critics’ picks for the three songs from each album that stand a cut above the rest and should be in your heavy rotation now — and later. Be sure to let us know what your favorites are.
Future: The WIZRD
1. “Talk Shit Like A Preacher”
ATL Jacob turns in a spirited soundscape with this heat-rock of a record, over which Future boasts from the comfort of the pulpit in his trap. Brandishing his jewelry and artillery, the Atlanta bred trapper keeps his sermon short. But, the spirit of the message is one that is sure to keep listeners coming back.
2. “Unicorn Purp”
Three of Atlanta’s finest connect on this highlight, which combines Future with Young Thug and Gunna. It extols the virtues of sipping Promethazine. Produced by ATL Jacob, this tune captures three of rap’s most beloved artists hitting on all cylinders and combining their talents for one of the finest moments on the album.
3. “Goin Dummi”
Wheezy cooks up what may be the hottest beat of the 20 tracks on the album with this production, which coaxes an exceptional performance on the part of Future. Cascading over the drums and synths with finesse, the man of the hour goes stupid with the expenditures while giving listeners a glimpse of the Freebandz lifestyle.
James Blake: Assume Form
1. “Mile High”
Frequent flyer miles are racked up on this ethereal groove from the British crooner’s latest long player. Featuring a guest appearance from Travis Scott, this number is an instant standout and boasts a sublime performance by Blake. His vocals blend seamlessly with his costar’s.
2. “Tell Them”
Singer/songwriter Moses Sumney’s introductory verse sets the tone on this salvo. Contributing a hook and bridge; Blake rides shotgun and harmonizes with Sumney over piano keys, synths, and 808 drums. This culminates in a jittery composition that’s among the album’s more sultry offerings.
3. “Where’s The Catch”
Rap recluse Andre 3000 comes out of hibernation on this piano-driven cut, which captures the legendary lyricist showcasing his knack for spellbinding wordplay. Produced by Blake and Dan Foat, this collaboration is an enticing listen on the strength of Andre 3000’s presence alone. But, when matched with Blake’s vocals, the song’s replay value elevates to another level.
YNW Melly: We All Shine
1. “No Heart”
“I’m not playing fair with my love no more,” YNW Melly croons on this thuggish ballad from the Floridian’s latest collection. Displaying his vulnerabilities and opening his heart over guitar licks, pianos and 808s; the rising star shuns commitment, while reflecting on love lost.
2. “Mixed Personalities”
YNW Melly is in a lovelorn state on this C-Clip Beatz produced banger, lamenting the hardships that come from being involved with an indecisive woman. Boasting a feature from Kanye West, who makes his first guest appearance of the new year, this melodic treat is Melly’s most high-profile collab to date.
3. “Ingredients”
Producer SMKEXCLSV provides the backdrop for this upbeat ditty from We All Shine, which captures the teenage sensation in a festive mood and living life to the fullest. Featuring a guest spot from Fredo Bang, the track finds Fredo and Melly trading verses over piano keys, snaps, and booming percussion. It’s sure to rack up plenty of spins in your playlist.
