Drake fans have a new corner of the internet to hang out in.
On Thursday (Jan. 17), a new documentary focusing on the illustrious career of the actor-turned-rapper has unexpectedly appeared in select regions on streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon and other digital outlets.
According to its accompanying IMDB page, the film, titled Drake: Rewriting the Rules, invites fans to “discover the untold story of how Drake rewrote the rules and rose from a child actor to become a cultural phenomenon and global musical icon. He is the king of pop and hip hop, combining many musical styles into one mainstream sound.”
The documentary was produced by an underground British director named Ray Louis and is listed as an unauthorized production. The film, which is compiled largely of archival footage, also includes interviews from several media figures. They include Rolling Stone contributing editor Joe Levy, writer and professor Jason King, and journalist and author Kathy Iandoli.
On the Netflix page, the documentary is described as being about “a child actor from Canada changed the game in hip hop by blending bars with melodies. This documentary follows Drake’s unique journey to superstardom.”
While it is unclear how the flick made its way onto a premiere platform such as Netflix, Rewriting The Rules is not the first time an unauthorized film about Drake has curiously made its rounds online. Last year, back in January, a documentary called Toronto to Houston was released by Instagram personality MarQuis Trill. It was centered around the relationship between the Toronto native and his impact on Houston.
As pointed out by Pitchfork, Rewriting the Rules excludes any involvement from official members of the 6 God’s team. At the time of this report, Drake — nor a representative from his camp — has commented on the matter.
For the time being, the unofficial Drake documentary can be streamed on Netflix here.
