While there is ample to miss about Barack Obama’s presidency, one annual tradition in particular is still going strong. In true form, the former president has continued his year-end custom, recapping his favorite books, movies and music from the year that just passed.
On Friday (Dec. 28), Obama shared his picks for 2018, revealing that he too enjoyed some of the most acclaimed moments that defined pop culture this year, just like us common folk. From citing his wife Michelle Obama’s memoir, Becoming, as his “obvious” favorite to bigging up Cardi B, the former president is wholeheartedly embracing his “cool dad” tastemaker side.
“As 2018 draws to a close, I’m continuing a favorite tradition of mine and sharing my year-end lists,” Obama shared, prior to revealing his 2018 selections, in a post on Facebook. “It gives me a moment to pause and reflect on the year through the books, movies, and music that I found most thought-provoking, inspiring, or just plain loved. It also gives me a chance to highlight talented authors, artists, and storytellers – some who are household names and others who you may not have heard of before. Here’s my best of 2018 list – I hope you enjoy reading, watching, and listening.”
After naming a list of his favorite books, as well as citing films Black Panther, Won’t You Be My Neighbor and BlacKkKlansman, Obama got right down into playlist mood, sharing the sounds that helped soundtrack his personal 2018.
First and foremost, he selects “Apes–t” by The Carters to top the list, going on to exemplify how his taste in music spans genres and even dips into the underground.
Among those in the R&B and hip hop categories are songs from artists such as Leon Bridges, H.E.R., Bryson Tiller, Cardi B, Bad Bunny, J Balvin, J. Cole, Khalid, Normani, Janelle Monáe, Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, BJ the Chicago Kid, Chance the Rapper, Joey Purp and more.
He also includes a throwback single from Prince, as well as gives an homage to jazz singer Nancy Wilson, who passed away earlier this month.
