Chris Brown has found himself in hot water once again. According to a new report from TMZ (Dec. 27), the singer is now facing two criminal charges after he reportedly obtained a baby capuchin monkey last year and did so without a permit.

As fans can recall, he first showed off the new exotic addition to his family on Instagram last December. At the time, he shared a video of his daughter Royalty playing with the animal, named Fiji, which promptly sparked controversy and raised concern for his then-3-year-old daughter’s safety. Evidently, due to the outcry from fans, the post eventually caught the attention of the California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife who promptly began looking into the situation.

According to reports, the investigating authorities were successful in obtaining a search warrant and were planning on raiding the singer’s home. However, before things could escalate, Breezy decided to proactively cooperate, voluntarily surrendering the animal.

Per legal docs obtained by TMZ, Brown is being charged with two counts of having a restricted species without a permit. If convicted, the criminal charges carry a maximum sentence of six months in jail.

“As I leave my office in Downtown L.A. and walk past people sleeping on the street on my way to defend people charged by the City Attorney with selling medical marijuana… now spending taxpayer money on investigating monkey business, this completes the circle on his absurdity,” Brown’s attorney, Mark Geragos, shared with TMZ back in January of this year.

As reported, Brown is due to appear in court on February 6.

The legal issue is not the first Brown has faced this year. He was previously arrested in West Palm Beach, Fla. due to an outstanding warrant for charges of felony battery stemming from an incident that allegedly took place in 2017.
