Meek Mill has been razor-focused on advocating on behalf of those who have found themselves unjustly caught up in the social justice system and fighting for tangible change. With his new album Championships slated to drop this Friday (Nov. 30), the Philadelphia rapper continued the conversation during an appearance on Ellen.

After playing a lighthearted game of ping-pong backstage, Meek sat down to talk to the beloved host Ellen DeGeneres about his own legal case and his hopes for the future, even revealing that while he was incarcerated her show was a popular choice for inmates to watch inside.

He also shared that he first learned about his imminent release while watching TV. “I was watching the news and [seeing] ‘Meek Mill is up for bail,’” he explained. “I dropped my food and jumped up in the air. I was leaving 10 minutes later. I came outside and I was kind of dizzy.”

Meek also explained the driving force behind his own advocacy efforts is to simply give back to the community that stood by him during the highs and lows of his career.

“Growing up in the environment that I grew up in, there wasn’t a lot of support,” he shared. “So I wanted to pay the people back that actually came out and, like, supported me and really just, make what’s right, right. Because a lot of these things don’t make sense and everybody know that it don’t make sense but nobody focusin’ on changin’ it.”
