Vince Staples talks Mac Miller: "I never seen him dying"
Vince Staples is still in disbelief about his dear friend Mac Miller no longer being here.
Friends, family and fans are still mourning the tragic death of Mac Miller. Back in September, the recording artist was found dead in his California home. It wouldn’t be until this week that the public learned the late rapper’s cause of death — which was only speculated before — was “from mixed drug toxicity” that included fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol.
Vince Staples, who was close to Miller, spoke about his deceased friend during an interview on Real 92.3 LA’s “Big Boy’s Neighborhood.” While speaking about the demons that Miller faced and his drug addiction, Staples told Big Boy, “He was trying. All you can ask for is for somebody to try. You can’t always win, you know?”
Then, the radio host asked Staples if he ever envisioned Miller dying from his sickness. “Nah, I never seen him dying,” the FM! rapper continued. “He was too happy. But to be honest, the good ones always die. So it makes sense in retrospect, but I was never worried about him. I was worried about him, but never, like, to that extreme.”
One thing that both Staples and Big Boy loved about Miller was the fact that he always seemed happy. The late MC would always have a smile on his face and he always made everyone around him feel good. Staples and Big Boy added that they never saw Miller frowning or in a bad mood.
“He wasn’t that kind of person [sad]. He was bright,” Staples said. “As far as all them people, it’s all good. I appreciate what they say but, I need them to say that to his momma. And say that to his family, and check on them. That’s what I care about.”
Staples, as well as a number of other artists like Travis Scott, Chance the Rapper, SZA, Juicy J, Ty Dolla $ign, John Mayer and more performed at the “Mac Miller: A Celebration of Life” tribute concert on Halloween. All proceeds went to the Mac Miller Circles Fund, an organization that provides “programming, resources and opportunities to youth from underserved communities, helping them recognize their full potential through exploration in the arts and community building,” per the fund’s website.
