Thursday evening (Sept. 6), those in attendance at Childish Gambino‘s “This Is America” tour opener in Atlanta were given some bittersweet news.

During the performance at the city’s Infinite Energy arena, Gambino confirmed that the tour will also double as his “last ever.”

“Number one, if you’re at this show, then you know this is the last Gambino tour ever,” he shared, addressing the crowd in a clip now making its rounds online. “I love you forever for supporting me and coming out for this shit. Second, if you’re in here, that means you bought a ticket. So, you don’t need to film this shit. Experience this shit. This is not a concert. This is fucking church. If you’re not here to celebrate life, if you’re not here to enjoy your time here, if you’re just here to hear your favorite song, you should go home right now and do that. I’m here to have an experience with y’all tonight, you feel me?”

While the news isn’t exactly surprising for those who have been paying close attention to the multifaceted creative, it does further echo previous comments about the direction the man born Donald Glover is looking to head in next. Last year, he announced that the upcoming Childish Gambino album will be his last under that name.

In addition to making the announcement on stage, Gambino also debuted two new songs during his live set—”Algorhythm” and “All Night”—which were previously sent to fans who purchased tickets to his upcoming concert dates. His tour is slated to run through October, with Vince Staples and Rae Sremmurd joining him for select dates.

On top of stating that this tour will be his last as Childish Gambino, Glover also made headlines this week after news broke that he is joining Adidas as the brand’s latest co-creator. According to a press release, the new partnership is “built on a foundation of mutual creative respect,” and will feature Glover overseeing a slew of projects, footwear and apparel.

Regardless of where the future may take Donald Glover after he retires Childish Gambino, fans can rest assured it’s still looking bright as ever. After all, he’s consistently proven he’s both a man of his word and a man of surprise.
