Just as fans were celebrating a cosmetic victory for the legacy of the Cash Money and Young Money kingdoms—this time in the form of Birdman publicly apologizing to Lil Wayne after years of public beef—another new lawsuit has surfaced to remind us that, well, there’s still a lot of taxing business each respective label venture has to attend to.
As reported by PageSix Wednesday (August 29), Tyga has decided to pursue legal action against Birdman and Lil Wayne, claiming that they have cheated him out of at least $1 million in royalties since Cash Money and Young Money Entertainment parted ways in 2016.
According to Tyga, he has made requests for the money owed but has yet to receive any payment, leading him to sue for breach of contract.
Throughout his career, Tyga has had no shortage of financial problems, ranging from reportedly failing to pay rent to falling behind on payments to his jeweler to being accused of damaging a Los Angeles home he’d rented to run a side business. In May 2018, news broke that he has reportedly racked up $890,183.87 in back taxes (from the years 2011-2016).
Perhaps his decision to file a new lawsuit against Cash Money and Young Money Entertainment, if successful, will help him turn a new page regarding his finances.
Money drama aside, this year has been a productive one for the California rapper. February saw the release of his sixth studio album, Kyoto, with his May single “Taste,” which features Offset, marking his return to the Billboard Hot 100 after three years. The single has since been certified platinum. Most recently, Tyga released a sultry summer anthem, “SWISH.”
